A little bit about me…
Ever since I was a child, I've been inspired by the written word. An incurable bookworm, I excelled at English at school and loved crafting occasionally prize-winning essays. Armed with the certainty that I’d stumbled upon my primary talent, I decided to turn it into a career.
Graduating with a 2:1 in English literature and politics in 2000, I completed my NCTJ in magazine journalism at Harlow College, then worked as a freelance writer for publications including The Guardian, Sight & Sound, Total Film and the Independent on Sunday (plus numerous other outlets too obscure to mention).
After completing internships at the Mail on Sunday and People Management magazine, I worked part-time for publishers Mediamark and Atalink. This secured me a job as a sub-editor at Reader's Digest magazine in 2004, and for the next few years I worked my way up the organisation, finally being appointed editor-in-chief in 2014.
After three rollercoaster years in charge (which involved recruiting a new team, redesigning the magazine, overhauling our digital operations and launching a podcast, while continuing to write, edit and commission), I left Reader’s Digest to take up a position as head of editorial and marketing at AllAboutGroup, with a focus on digital operations, sales strategies, SEO and lead generation.
When that role came to an end in 2020 (courtesy of the pandemic), I spent a couple of years studying, networking and freelancing before taking up a full-time role at TPXimpact. I’ve realised that content strategy and creation is what motivates me, and luckily there’s more demand for great copy than ever before!
So, what have I learned on my journey? Well, I’m still in love with the written word, except now I understand it much better. My experience has taught me:
How to craft disciplined copy, where every word counts and has maximum impact.
How to meet tight deadlines and specific requirements.
How to engage audiences and anticipate their needs.
How to communicate with clients, to ensure everyone is on the same page.
